Toronto Sends: Aaron Alther, OF, PHI, $3,800,000 2019-20P Richard Urena, SS, TOR, $600,000 20xx
Minnesota Sends: Francisco Rodriguez, RP, FA? (Honestly I have no idea), $10,000,000 2018 Jorge Polanco, SS, TOR, $8,000,000 2021
Toronto Reason: I would like to first say negotiations were very smooth, thanks Tom! Second, I needed a SS who was ready to play now and MIN had an interest in both guys I was looking to trade. I buy Polanco's second half improvements and he is young still while also helping me get more competitive now. I like Urena, but I could not afford to wait for him to turn into Polanco. MIN gets immediate salary relief and I could afford to take on bonus salary to get a player who can help me now.

MIN Reasons:
I was going to wait and just ride out KRod's salary but got the opportunity to gain some salary cap now. Was happy w/ Polanco as my SS but $8 mil seems like a lot when I could probably find an equally average SS somewhere else. Gaining a cheaper contract w/ OF Altherr (who will be the Phillies 4th OF but can play all 3 OF positions so should play enough or get traded) at $3.8 mil thru just 2020 gives me $$ to spend elsewhere (as I have numerous more pressing needs in creating cap space and building up my minors).

It's probably an even trade though I'm predisposed to like Minnesota's end more for the cap savings plus it's hard to know how to rate Polanco based on half a season. OTOH K-Rod expires after this year anyway (and might actually resurface if he makes the Phillies) and Polanco has the highest celing of anyone in the deal.

I think Polanco is most likely the best player in this deal, though I agree with Hasan in that MIN is receiving 2 very solid young players for him. Dead even for me, nice trade.

+10 Twins
K-Rod hasn't been good since...well, he was an Angel, it seems. Polanco is interesting. I feel like his one hot month last season is his absolute ceiling and the rest of the time is what we'll regularly see from Polanco - which would appear to make him a typical (or above-avg perhaps) MLB shortstop, a decent batting-average, limited-power, bottom-of-the-order bat with above-avg on-base skills. For a 23-year old, his recent power development isn't a complete shock but I'm still not sure he's a legit 15-homer threat - I think double-digits with consistency is the best you can hope for.
I'd like this deal a lot more for Blue Jays if Polanco only cost $1.5MM or so instead of $8MM.
Not only did Twins shed significant salary, he also got Altherr - who has already shown flashes of OF2 potential if he stays healthy, keeps the K-rate under 30%, and develops consistency. Being under $4MM, it's not a bad investment - moderate risk, moderately-high reward. Urena may never become Jorge Polanco - that's OK if Polanco becomes a top-10 SS but far from ideal if Polanco resides around 20-30 at his position. But Urena's still only 22 this season and has much less pro experience than Polanco.
Polanco's overpriced salary, K-Rod's salary, and adding Altherr makes me feel like Twins was the clear winner - maybe not by a lot but definitively.

+5 Twins. Player wise this trade seems pretty even. I like Altherr, think could be a 20 homer guy with a good OPS. Urena is a giant question mark with good potential but a concerning track record. Polanco I think will play quite a bit and put up some helpful counting stats but has a low ceiling. K-Rod is probably done.
The kicker in this deal is the salary dump. Polanco is a bit overpriced and K-Rod obviously is a nice let go. Fortunately for the Jays they can afford it and get 10 mill back when the year is done. Good trade for both teams

+3 TOR
Judging the state of both teams, I think this is a better move for TOR overall while being a net positive for MIN as well.
TOR needs a SS in a bad way and has a lot of cap space post Free Agency. You couldn't ask much more from Polanco's performance in 2017. Now he's likely to get a full year at SS there's no reason to think that he can't build on 2017. 8M is hefty, but he's 24, has performed consistently in the last two years and Toronto has been looking for a SS for like 5 months.
Rodriguez is a salary dump, that carries no risk when you have 30 some mil in cap space post FA. Alther is okayish, but last year is likely his ceiling, Urena has not been very good for the last two years so it's not a high price to pay, especially when you look at Toronto's minors. Good trade for both teams
