CHC sends: Chris Taylor $0.6 MM 2018-19T
SD sends: Brent Rooker, OF, MIN Jhaylin Ortiz, OF, PHI Chris Paddack, SP, SD
I couldn't turn this offer down. Even though this steals some strength from my 2018 major league roster, my recent addition of DeJong makes Taylor replaceable to some extent. Only having 2 years of control on Taylor hurts his value in my eyes somewhat, and I only need one of Rooker or Ortiz to become the 30 HR cornerstone they seem more likely than not to become.

The package of Ortiz, Rooker, and Paddack offers a ton of upside. On the flip side, Taylor also brings a lot of value with his position eligibility, cheap contract, age, skill growth in 17, and the fact he's a Dodger. Big price to pay to get him but productive middle infielders on cheap contracts don't come along everyday. I have a competitive team, but without making a move my infield was going to be a serious liability after a couple of real life trades negatively impacted the roles a couple of my guys will have moving forward. Perhaps going all out to win now will fall short of a championship, but since when have Padres fans demanded championships anyway?

I initially wanted to give it to the Cubs, but I think its +0 or in favor of the Padres slightly. Taylor helps now and all those guys, while having a lot of promise, are just far away from the majors. I am fully on board with the changed Chris Taylor so if he helps the padres now, it was worth it.

+5 Cubs
Very interesting trade. I lean in Cubs direction because of the huge upside he's getting back. While I'm not sure either slugger can maintain consistent 30+ homer power due to other issues with their swings, as Curtis said, if just one guy manages to come close, that's not bad at all. Paddack is a guy I like - his main knock is injury concerns, plus he hasn't pitched in advanced levels yet either. I think the decent dice roll on Paddack swayed me to put the +5 on Cubs.
Padres get a very good player. As long as Taylor sees enough middle infield time to maintain eligibility there, I like this trade for him if he feels this is what he needs to compete. While 2 years isn't a long time for the talent he gave up, 2 years at $600K is big-time value for those 2 years, giving him salary flexibility to further improve his MLB roster elsewhere.

+7 Cubs. I love Brent Rooker. I might love him even more than normal people. The guy was the leading hitter in the SEC last year and he crushed; getting promoted to Fort Myers in his first half season as a pro. He's a quick riser as if e everything goes right he could be a September call up this year! More realistic is he'll be up midyear 2019. A future 1B/DH, but the man crushes. Ortiz is all power as well! .961 OPS in low A, being 18 the whole time, if he keeps the K% down, he could be a top 100 prospect next year. Paddock is all results, and he is a reliever, but he's pretty good at both! Overall, it's a good package for Curtis.
Chris Taylor is inexpensive, and good. He had a good year last year, and you have to believe that was a breakout year for him or if it was a fluke. Like Avisail Garcia, you have to really like him to give up a package like this. I wouldn't do this deal, but it makes sense overall for a competing team! Good deal, but I prefer Curtiss' side.

+10 Cubs
The upside given up by the Padres definitely pushes this deal to the Cubs in my opinion. Rooker and Ortiz looked great last year and while Paddack didn't play, his numbers prior to last year were great as well. None are MLB proven, obviously, but I'd rather have 5+ years of arbitration contracts for each of these 3 guys (particularly Rooker) than 2 years of Taylor.
That being said, if the Padres think Taylor gets them over the hump and makes them a contender, I get why they made the deal. You literally can't get a lower salary for a productive player.
