Phillies send: - Odubel Herrera, $9.9MM, 2021
Rays send: - Brandon Finnegan, $7.5MM, 2021
- MiLBFA pick 3.6
Phillies reasoning: - Acquired a decent pick in the upcoming MiLBFA draft (which is a high priority for me as begin reworking my roster more to my liking)
- Acquired a young, upside arm in Finnegan (while the injury risk is there, I believe his upside is good enough to warrant the $7.5MM salary, expecting him to exceed contract value by the time 2021 rolls around)
- Sending Herrera (I have a surplus of hitters on my MLB roster and need to continue making room for promotions, making him and his $9.9MM salary expendable for the return)

Rays accept, I needed to add at least one more bat to my outfield via trade and Herrera's still young enough where he can improve somewhat and is on a decent contract with control. I figured Finnegan was somewhat expendable as a #4 behind my big three with other cheaper options that can take his place. Would have preferred not to give up a pick with my draft spot but figured a high three was a fair ask in this trade.
Good negotiations Phillies, we kicked around a few things and found a good trade for both of us.

+5 Rays. Meets the needs for both sides, but since the prices of each player are not that far off, I would much rather have the hitter.
