Houston trades: George Springer 20.5M 2021 Jacob Nottingham
Minnesota trades: Byron Buxton 12.2M 2021
Houston agrees to this deal because I was pushed up against the cap and I get younger and cheaper in the outfield. I'm buying into the hype of Buxton becoming Springer with a little less power but being a superstar. Losing Springer hurts my power output and I will need to find a way to compensate for that. Jacob Nottingham is a guy I have soured on but could become a reasonable backup or fringe starter in the bigs.
I would just like to say that Tom was great to work with and got straight to the point. He knew what he wanted and attacked even though I didn't really have Springer listed as available.

MIN take: It was so easy working with Brenden (as well as all the other guys that I have already messaged and/or done deals with). I didn't anticipate using up some of the salary cap that I have just opened it but the chance to get Springer + a C prospect was too much to pass up. C's appear tough to get in this league. The biggest plus for Nottingham is mainly the lack of solid guys in front of him in MIL. So he has a shot of making in into the MLB either as a C or other position.
Obviously getting Springer is an upgrade. I'm not so much on the Buxton hype train but I do think his steals will increase as things move forward. More than willing to give that up for Springer's plus side.

+20 Twins
I like Twins' moves - not just this deal.
While Springer isn't cheap, he's controlled and likely to produce at least contract value or more. Twins also got a once-hot catcher prospect. I don't think Nottingham is a major-league regular but he's not too old that he can't improve his prospect status.
In addition to adding Springer, I think unloading Buxton and his $12.2MM salary is also a good move for the Twins. Buxton's free roster spot was upgraded to an All-star (and WS MVP) for only ~$8MM more. I have never believed in Buxton, regardless of his "true 5-tool" assets. I think it's a bold risk on Astros' part to save some salary and potentially improve other areas of his roster but I still see Buxton and his free-swinging ways as a high-risk/moderate-reward gamble. I feel like his ceiling is a slightly better-hitting with fewer-steals Billy Hamilton but with better defense (which doesn't matter in our league but obviously helps him stay in a lineup).

+25 Twins. Ive always thought Buxton was an over rated prospect. Good steal guy that plays great defense. Not great for fantasy at least. Springer is one of the best OF in fantasy. A proven superstar. To get a decent catcher prospect is a huge bonus.

+20 Twins. I too am not a member of the Buxton fan club, but if I was I would understand making this trade. I just think that there is so much more certainty that Springer's performance will continue, to the point where it easily outweighs the ~$8 million annual savings that the Astros get from this deal.

+5 Twins. For fantasy, this goes to MIN. I really like Buxton. He really got it going towards the end of the season. In back to back seasons he's been a 2nd half superstar. If this were real life, I wouldn't do this deal if I was Minnesota, but in fantasy, Springer is a really good fantasy player. Buxton is an INCREDIBLE fielder, but for fantasy, Springer gets the edge.

Buxton absolutely crushed in the second half, one hopes he can carry some of that over. No matter how many times people have been burned and soured on him he's still got one of the highest ceilings in the game. In the end this boils down to the contract. Springer is unlikely to outperform his contract, he is a stud and he's paid like one. Buxton's contract is based off 2016 rankings, which is his floor. He's unlikely to strike out that much again, and even with those abysmal batted ball profiles he was still an above average offensive regular.
Saving 8 mil, getting 4 years younger to take a chance on a player who has exhibit 25 mil talent and has the pedigree to think he can back it up makes sense. It's a tough call to move Springer but I think understand gambling on upside and flexibility. I'd call it a win for HOU but he didn't get paid for the risk, would have liked to see something comeback. Nottingham addition is just strange, but he's a non-factor so w/e.
