As two division foes that don’t appear to be concerned about what the hometown newspapers write about them, Baltimore and Boston announce the following trade:
Red Sox trades
Pedro Strop, RHP Cubs, $4,600,000 2012-22P (Red Sox will eat $2.8 million of 2018 salary)
to Orioles for
James Nelson, 3B Marlins (minors) Kyle Johnston, RHP Nationals (minors)
With only 32 players on the active roster and 39 players on the minors roster, the Red Sox lacks depth but also needs to reduce salary on the 40-man roster. This trade accomplishes both objectives while dealing from a position of surplus (relief pitchers). Nelson and Johnston are both quality prospects and both have a chance to turn into solid major league players.

Sorry- I meant to edit but I must have done something wrong. I wanted to do an edit because I had Strop’s contract term incorrect in the original post. Strop’s contract should read 2021-22P, not 2012-22P.

Orioles accept. Need some help in the bullpen and Strop can provide some stability. With the tight cap inherited from my predecessor, moves have been limited. The prospects have some pretty good upside, so we will see how this deal pans out long term.
