Rays deal: C Francisco Cervelli $8,000,000 (2019) AMAT pick 3.6
White Sox deal: MiLB OF Drew Waters MiLB SP Juan Then
It's been an open secret that I've been willing to move Cervelli for a while - given the fact having two semi-expensive starting catchers wasn't a luxury I needed this year with my team off to a poor and injury-plagued start, and Cervelli was one of the few expendable pieces with value I could deal off to save money for both this year and next year (when the budget's still tight with less retained money on the Kershaw deal and arb raises looming). I figured I'd eventually be able to find a spot for Cervelli given the number of contenders that needed a C, White Sox weren't among them till today but ironically we had briefly discussed a deal even beforehand. Obviously the interest was higher on his end to do something after his starting catcher went to PED jail, and he was willing to offer up a couple of prospects with high-end upside, albeit young and playing at really low minor league levels.
Waters was picked with an early 2nd rounder last year in the AMAT draft and his value's arguably increased since then so I also had to give back my high 3rd AMAT pick this year as part of the deal to give Sox a potential quality replacement. Then was a guy I'd eyed in the late rounds of the MiLB draft but he got taken a few spots before me. Taron's ability and willingness to take back the whole Cervelli contract helped the deal come together quickly today.

White Sox accept.
We had preliminary discussions about Cervelli and I wasn't as interested because Castillo was playing well and I had him under contract for a while. Then he had his incident and that was a big decipher in my plans. Cervelli is having a career year and of course I'm not planning on him continuing. I acquired Cervelli to continue competing and trying to win the central. The contract isn't a big deal, as I have about 20 million in expiring next year. So, Cervelli will go right in the starting catching role.
Waters is someone the previous Sox owner spent a high 2nd round pick on last year. I really like him. He's in A ball still though and he doesn't walk very often. He's still a good hitter and will be a solid prospect. Then is like 18 and is in the DSL. So, I'm okay with letting him go. Hes a lottery ticket.
Thanks for doing the deal, Hasan.

Even.... rays dump $ and get 2.....alright but far off prospects, Sox get a guy to fill a hole, (lol cause by PED jail ) and get a pick that should produce a real life 2nd rounder. I still say Hasan should of helped me out and held out for more, since the SOXs are in my division
