San Diego Padres receive: Eric Thames.. Full 2018 contract retained. 2019 6 million retained.
Texas Rangers receive: Franklin Barreto
Why the Rangers accepted this deal: Ever since the initial MiLB draft, I coveted Barreto. He went one pick before me( Sean is a good drafter btw). I have Mercer for 2018 and no replacement for 2019 and beyond until my younger prospects start rising up the ranks. Shortstop is a position that is hard to find quality in my opinion and Barretto has a chance to be a starting shortstop for years to come. I am rebuilding and Thames, a 1B, was kind of redundant in my plans for the future.
Eric Thames is a producer. Ever since he has come back from Korea, he has mashed. He is injured right now, but when he comes back he'll mash like usual. Thames is a guy I like and was willing to pay 12 million a year for. I am happy for Sean to get Thames, because he will slot right in and produce.
