Dodgers trade 2018 AMAT Draft picks 3.1, 3.16 and 5.1
Padres trade 2018 AMAT Draft Pick 1.18.
It’s pretty simple reasoning for me. I have a somewhat loaded farm system, with only a few spots to fill. Trading some mid level picks for another 1st rounder gives me three 1st round shots at picking a top producer and I still have several later round lottery tickets to fill my minors roster.

A combination of a shallow farm system, and having several draft targets that will be available after round 1, is why I'm happy to be moving down to get more picks in this draft.

Conceptially, it makes sense for me on both sides.
Moving down 30 spots for two extra picks though... ugh. I probably wouldn't of done this deal if I was SD. I understand the concept, since I've been doing the same thing, but 30 spots is quite a step.
I won't have to worry about Sean taking my guy in the 2nd round like he did last year lol. Brent Rooker is crazy haha.

I'll elaborate a little further on my reasoning. When building my draft board and considering the reasonable options of who I'd want to target at 1.18 I found myself including a lot of names in the 40-60 range, according to draft prospect rankings lists, while at the same time not being as high on higher ranked options. It's a gamble that could pay off big if my 1.18 target drops all the way to my pick 2.18. In any case, I'm optimistic about the players I can add in the 2.18/3.1/3.16 range, and 5.1 could end up being more than just a lottery ticket. We shall see. I'm interested to see how it plays out, as you guys know, I don't shy away from risky trades
