Boston sends: Jeff Mcneil 4,200,000 2022
Cincinnati Sends: Anthony DeSclafani 4,300,000 2021-22P 2020 MilFA 4th round pick
I accept
Normally I don't like buying high and selling low, but I really like McNeil. He has elite bat control and can control the strike zone on top of that. I'm not too worried about the Cano and Lowrie as the Mets have holes in the OF to plug him into as well. BABIP implies some ratio regression and there is concern that the ISO spike doesn't continue but it's not as if I'm trading him for a piece without flaws himself. I said this when aquiring Tony Disco, there's a lot to like and a lot to be scared of. No decrease in stuff, pitched well in the second half, GB/FB and hard hit rates stayed the same, FIP was well below ERA, but his HR/FB rate skyrocketed including during his better second half.
So it's risk vs risk but I feel the floor, youth, flexibility, and if both meet upside I would still prefer McNeil which makes him the more desirable asset for me.
Thanks to Jason for the trade.

Boston confirms. I'll counter Woods' HR/FB argument with the fact that those types of things tend to regress as long as you keep throwing strikes and missing bats. DeSclafani did both during the second half of last year, and did them both well. I also like DeSclafani significantly more than I like the other options available in the FA market on the pitching end so he provides a boost to my rotation. McNeil's PT is up in the air with the 1900 infielders the Mets acquired this year so the uncertainty gives me a lack of confidence. Too bad he wasn't traded to the Mariners.
Thanks Woods - we got a deal done after all!

+5 Red Sox
I'll admit, after that blockbuster trade, this one feels like a letdown, Jason...ha.
DeSclafani has shown flashes of brilliance multiple times throughout his injury-marred career. That balances out McNeil being more of an unknown MLB commodity with less of a track record against major league pitchers who now have a book on him - sophomore slumps are real for a reason. As I see it, McNeil has slightly more impact potential with higher risk than DeSclafani overall. The pick attached to DeSclafani gives Red Sox the slight edge in an otherwise even trade.
If DeSclafani stays healthy, there's big potential for a big swing in Red Sox' favor.

Big deals are cool but little deals have to happen too!

+15 Boston McNeil had a good debut as a prospect that came out of nowhere, worried that it may have been a flash in the pan, and he doesnt have a clear path to playing time. Give the edge to Boston on moving his contract and getting a pitcher with upside and a pick.

In my opinion both managers are winners: Jason got a decent arm that can help him right now and Woods got the better player who just need some playing time.
