Phillies send: - Peacock, $5.75MM, 2019-20M
- Owings, $5.6MM, 2021-22P
Padres send: - Cespedes, $17.7MM, 2020 (-$5MM in 2019 retained by NYM)
Phillies reasoning: - Round 3 of FA doesn't look promising to fill my OF needs, and while Cespedes may not even play in 2019, if he even plays half the season it could help my team a lot; I'll deal with 2020 when that time comes
- Owings is essentially dead money to offset the loss of a high-quality reliever (maybe starter) in Peacock - but Peacock only has 1 guaranteed year left on his contract - who's not a sure bet for Holds, Saves, or QS even though his peripherals will be excellent
- I'm gambling on the upside potential of a finally-healthy Cespedes as a better investment overall than another bullpen arm, while good, is not an integral need on my roster

I have a few reasons behind this trade.
1)I like Peacock's strikeout stuff, whether he starts or comes out of the bullpen.
2)Financially this helps me out a bit for next year when I'll need to replace several players via free agency, more so if I lose Peacock.
3)I'm higher on Owings than Paul is and think it's possible Owings could put up useful depth numbers for this league based on how unlucky he was in 2018. Whether he is ever worth his salary idk, but I can handle his contract.
4)My acquisition of Cespedes has been a bust. I got him to beef up for a playoff run in 2017 and he's been hurt almost the entire time since. Getting any return at all is a boost.

Obviously determining who "won" this deal will hinge on Cespedes' health - who knows which way it will go.
Trade processed.
