CHC sends Brad Boxberger, RP, KC $1,500,000 2020
NYY sends Oneil Cruz, SS, PIT
I was hoping that Boxberger would wind up somewhere to boost his value when I signed him in FA. I'd seen how much Josh spent on Wily Peralta and figured he'd be interested in Boxberger as insurance. Boxberger certainly has the potential to make this deal look bad in a few months, last year's 14 K/9 was what jumped out at me in FA. I've been trying to acquire Cruz for a while now as he has huge risk but significant upside as a 6'6" infielder. I don't expect him to stick at SS whatsoever, but he could be a beast someday at another infield position.

Accept, I was kinda high in Cruz, it took the Cubs a while to pry him away but the insurance and upside of boxberger was hard to refuse for a big maybe in Cruz!! Good deal!!

+50 CHC. This is a bad trade. Boxberger was a bottom end free agent reliever two weeks ago and I dont care that he signed with KC and might close. KC is a 70 win team at best, and New York just signed their in house closer in Peralta. Oniel isnt the best prospect but he is a good one. This is a throw all the eggs into 2019 to win basket move for NYY, even if it works out its still not worth it to me. Disclaimer: This is my opinion

+25 CHC I definitely wouldn't have done this trade if I were the Yankees, but at least Boxberger could be useful this year. The fact that the Yankees already have Peralta makes this a little bit better for them (in my opinion) because now they've somewhat cornered the market on holds/saves from the Royals bullpen.....the Royals just aren't a desirable team to do this for.
Cruz made big improvements last year in his repeat of A ball, but he's still got a long way to go. That being said, I think the Yankees could've gotten a much better piece for Cruz based on where he's showing up in rankings after the improvements he made last year.
Overall, I agree with Robin, this move feels like mortgaging a future asset for a marginal return right now, but Cruz would have to be much more of a sure thing for to grade it as badly.

I guess we all value our futures prospects differently. I don't see Cruz in the majors till at least 2022 and don't see him as a beast at all. His avg. At a ball is super low which don't transcend to majors league talent in my opinion. But I like the comments because it shows me how much value some guys have to others. KC will not have a ton of wins but having boxberger and Peralta just shores up my RP which is exactly what I am looking for. I also feel like my 40 man has great young talent and my average age is only like 26-27 down the line with most signed through 2022! +25 NY in my opinion!!

The problem with this mindset (and with Boxberger) is yeah maybe you've locked up a bad bullpen - for half a season. Boxberger's on a one-year deal irl, if he's any good at all he's getting traded somewhere else as likely a setup guy by the deadline and who knows what happens to him next year, and if he's not good well that's not exactly ideal either, cheap contract or not. I wouldn't actually have an issue with this trade if Boxberger was a sure closer for the two years of his contract since closers are hard to find, but he'll maybe close for half a season then likely be just a decent setup guy at best.

He hit .286 in the SAL last year....good for 5th in the league among qualified hitters....as a 19-year-old. That's definitely not super low. Maybe you're using his age 18 stats. Even if Cruz amounts to nothing, my main issue with the trade is I think you could've gotten more than you did.
