Yankees trade to San Francisco SP Adam Warren $1,200,000 2019 1B Gregory Bird $10,300,000 2021 For 3B Nolan Jones 2016 5/7/1998 20.9 CLE Yankees accept this trade. I've been trying to deal bird since I took over this team. Jones is a really intriguing prospect to me. If this helps SF and I get a prospect back I'm ok with it! Good luck SF and welcome to the league.

+20 NYY if Bird returns to full form and gets sole possession of the 1B job then bird will be making his money. (But having voit motivates me to wish that never ever happens). I still wpuld rather have Jones. But to me (also given his most recent little injury) Bird is just not gonna get there which means he is highly over paid. NYY gets rid of him and gets my 2nd favorite 3b prospect in the game (behind vlady jr).

+40 NYY since I really don't get this trade...I liked the Giants other trade better, that's something you'd see in the NBA where you take back a bunch of salary to get young assets. But here he's giving up a top 100 prospect for a one-year filler reliever and a severe question mark in Bird who hasn't done a thing or stayed healthy in two years, getting paid like a starter for the next three. If anything Giants should have been getting back prospects and/or picks to take on that contract in full since they're assuming all the risk with this trade. Even in a total best-case, Giants are a team who likely should be rebuilding giving up a future asset for a now.

Bird had the highest walk ratio of spring as of the other day which bodes well for his avg. Compared to last year. He's had a good spring and if he carries it into the regular season he could be great trade bait for the Yankees. Him and Voit are in a good battle. Hope he works out for SF!

Prospect evaluations aside, conceptually this doesn't make much sense for Giants.
It's a buy low, but a buy low that will not return a lot of investment even in the best case scenario. Bird isn't a cheap hand, and will at best have 2 years or so remaining on the contract if the Giants try to flip him. Additionally the stigma around Bird will make trading him at with this contract all the more difficult.
If this isn't a buy low to flip, then this is a buy low to compete. Writing off this year, again that's two years of contribution towards the competitive window whereas Nolan would fit and conceivably extend the competitive window.
Now to the player comparisons, by most measures Jones is the more desirable piece in the deal by a fair margin. (Conservatively talking about a top 400 dynasty asset as opposed to a top 500 asset in Bird before contract concerns come into play.) I don't really find this too egregious, as there is a buy low, sell high component here, as Jones had been disappointing before last year, however the value likely should have been maximized a bit better.
