CHC sends: OF Oscar Mercado $600,000 20xx 1B Brent Rooker RHP Mason Denaburg OF Billy Hamilton $11,400,000 2019 (CIN covering $11.4 MM) SP J.A. Happ $12,200,000 2020 1B Lucas Duda $2,200,000 2020 OF Rajai Davis $600,000 2019 RP Zack Godley $600,000 2019 RP Juan Nicasio $2,700,000 2020
NYM sends: 1B Edwin Encarnacion $12,500,000 2021-22M RP Craig Kimbrel $16,200,000 2019 (NYM to cover $11.4 MM of salary) 5th rd MiLFA
With that, I finally address my CI need in a big way and add in potentially one of the best relief pitchers in baseball for the next half of a season. Although I lose a young everyday contributor in Mercado my outfield is deep enough to cope with his departure, and beyond him I didn't feel like Rooker and Denaburg were sure enough things to make this trade look bad for me in a couple of years. The rest is all salary balance considerations, actually freeing up a bit more for me to play with in Free Agency. With the favorites to win the ALCS making win-now moves I feel real pressure to keep up with the roster-building cycle and hope this is enough to keep my team's recent dominance going.

The key pieces of interest that I'm receiving here are Mercado, Rooker, and Denaburg. Mercado has already made it to the majors and has performed well so far and just eclipsed his rookie eligibility. Rooker is one of my favorite prospects. He's in his second full season and is already in AAA with an OPS of nearly 1.000. He's also only played in the outfield this year, and I'm hoping the Twins keep him there when he does eventually make it to the majors, but even if they don't, I love the power potential. Denaburg is the riskiest guy out of those three, but he was a first rounder by the real life Nationals last year, so I think he'll get plenty of chances despite his injury. I also think he equates to about a second rounder in this year's draft with the upside for more. The other players included were mostly for cap/roster purposes, but I got 2 in Happ and Nicasio that should be serviceable for me next year.
I acquired Kimbrel in a trade earlier this season with the intent to flip him again, so there should be no surprise I traded him here. I think I signed Encarnacion without anyone else bidding on him last offseason. He's old and I gave him some decent term, but I thought $12,500,000 was a bargain for how he'd perform in the short term, so I was still surprised no one else was interested. He's surpassed even my expectations so far this year and just moved to a much more hitter friendly park, so he could be a huge addition for Curtis here. That being said, he wasn't in my long term plans. I was hoping to get two good years out of him before flipping him elsewhere. I think Rooker will eventually be a solid replacement for him, so it made sense to do the trade sooner.
