Dodgers trade
Yusniel Diaz, OF, $600,000 20xx Danny Drullard, OF
for
Mike Moustakas, 3B, $12,000,000 2020
Dodgers reasoning:
With the 12th best record in the league this year, minimal losses from my roster, and several top 100 prospects still in the pipeline, I feel like my window for contention is opening in 2020. One area that my team appears weak, both now and in the near future, is 3B, so with no great options in free agency I felt like I needed to swing a deal for a guy that could help out next year. I’m hoping Moustakas is that guy. He’s also on a decent contract which ends next year at age 32, perfect for my liking. I had to give up a borderline top 100 guy in Diaz to get him, but I think it’s worth the risk. In the last couple years I’ve fluctuated between being high and low on Diaz. I think he’ll be an average regular someday, but he seem to be moving slowly since leaving the Dodgers system, so it was a risk I was willing to take. Drullard just spent his third straight year in the DSL, so he was a throw in to make the deal happen with SD. I don’t expect him to ever reach his potential in time to help my current team.
Thanks to the Padres for working on this to satisfy both our needs.

Padres reasoning:
My trajectory is heading in the opposite direction and with Moustakas only under contract for one more season, a season in which I'm not expecting to do much better than .500, at best, getting a return that will help in 2021 and beyond is the practical course of action. I view Yusniel Diaz as a relatively low risk prospect given his hit tool, and for that reason he fits my team needs as I continue to rebuild depth. Drullard is obviously just a lottery ticket and we'll see what he does outside of the DSL. If his power/speed/walk rate carries over at higher levels, I'll happily wait for him to move up the ranks.
Not huge return for Moose, but his trade value is a little deflated given the fact he'll be a free agent next offseason, so I'm satisfied with this move.

+1 to the Padres, I get the reasoning on both sides and it makes sense, but I like the return for a on year rental buying low on a recent top 100 guy.

Even trade, the Padres got a better return than the real-life Orioles got for Machado a year ago.
