Dodgers trade:
SP Ryan Weathers
Padres Trade:
SP Edward Cabrera 2B Michael Busch 3B Devin Mann
I’m really high on Weathers, but I just don’t need another SP right now and this was a good haul of prospects. I’m a little worried about Cabrera’s health, but I’m a huge Michael Busch believer. Devin Mann played at my high school, so he’s just a hometown favorite.

I have been overwhelmingly impressed with Weathers every time I watch him pitch. His stuff is better than it was when he was drafted, his command is legit and he’s always poised. Weathers fits a team need this year as a potential 5th starter for me. He also addresses a long term need since I will have a huge amount of SP turnover after 2022.
Some may view Cabrera as having a higher ceiling than Weathers, but I don’t, and I don’t mean that as a knock on Cabrera.
Sounds like Jon is higher on Busch than I am, although I do think he’s a solid prospect.
Ultimately this trade is about improving my rotation now and beyond 2022

Processing in advance of Monday and the 48 hour window, since the Padres don't play on Monday and Weathers' schedule will still be open.
I like the deal for both sides. I'm also a big believer in Michael Busch so I think the Dodgers did well to deal from rotation depth for a hopeful everyday lineup fixture in the near future.
