Here is a (hopefully exhaustive) list of tasks that will be important for GMs to perform during the Initial Free Agency period. I will continue to update this as questions arise.
Nomenclature:
"Leading Bid" - the highest bid point contract offering on a player at any moment in time. The bid that, if still standing 24 hours after placement, will win the bidding on a player.
Prior to Initial Free Agency
1. Download a copy of the Free Agent Calculator (link in blue header bar above)
2. Get familiar with the implications of the player options, and how they affect bid points when selected in the calculator
Daily (at a minimum) during Intitial Free Agency
1. Scan the list of player threads to see who is currently being bid on
2. Post leading bids on up to 5 new players (not already sold, not currently being bid on) per 24 hours. This will not be validated, but if you are caught in violation of this rule you will be suspended from bidding for 24 hours. This is an attempt to stagger the craziness over a couple of weeks, so please respect it. I do not want to hand out bidding suspensions.
---When beginning a new thread on a player, follow the following format: "First Last, Age as of 4/2/17, Abbreviated Team Name" = "Paul Goldschmidt, 30, ARI"
--- Ways to search for un-bid players ---
a. See point 1: See current players being bid. You can use the proboards search function for this too.
b. Use ctrl+F in the roster spreadsheet. Click the "..." button to see the option to search all sheets. Search for players by last name. If he is not listed in current threads or the spreadsheet, he is available to be posted as an initial offering.
3. Bid on existing players as you see fit (no limit for active bids except for part (b) below)
--- You MUST ---
a. Have the salary cap to fulfill all of your leading bids if they all become final; the total salary offered in your leading bids may not exceed your salary cap remaining. If one of your leading bids is out-bid by another owner, it no longer counts against this clause. Basically, if all of a sudden every owner in the league disappeared for 24 hours, you must have the salary cap to fulfill all of your leading bids. Feel free to use it as a "committed salary" tracker as long as the fact that it is a bid is clear, e.g. "BID Mike Trout" under player name and "30,000,000" under salary. I find this very useful in my other league
If any GM is found guilty of violating the above salary cap rule, they will be punished by having all active bids voided and be suspended from bidding for 12 hours.
b. Have the roster space to fulfill all bids placed. E.g. if you have 3 roster spots remaining you cannot place a leading bid on a 4th player.
4. Check back within 24 hours to see if your bid still stands, or has been beaten. Remember, 24 hours is the point at which the standing bid becomes the winning bid.
5. Repeat on a 24 hour (or less) cycle
When you win a player
When your leading bid has stood for 24 hours, the player is yours! Feel free to post that he is sold to you on the thread - not necessary but helpful. Replicate the terms of the contract in your spreadsheet. We will have co-commissioners helping with this, but anything you can do to keep on top of your own team would be GREATLY appreciated.
Say you won a player for 2 years with a player option: "2018-19P" or 1 year with a mutual option: "2017-18M"
