DET sends:
J.D. Martinez ($20.3 MM 2018, DET retains $7 MM for 2017 only)
CHC sends:
Jacoby Ellsbury ($5.3 MM 2018) Miguel Montero ($0.81 MM 2017-18T) Chris Coghlan ($1 MM 2018) Jose Albertos (SP, CHC) Khalil Lee (OF, KC) Dwight Smith Jr. (OF, TOR)
CHC rationale: I thought I was trying to rebuild, and then everyone else jumped on board and stole my thunder. After a 10-2 win last week I'm back in it and have been looking to improve my outfield in a big way - here it is.
This move puts me slightly over cap for 2018 so I'll need to work through that in the offseason, but otherwise my win-now mantra dictates that I deal high-upside but young prospects for 1.5 years of control over one of the best hitters in the game.

Detroit Agrees,
Really really don't want to see JD go, he really is one of the best hitters in the game, unfortunately his contract expires just short of my target to be competitive. but in return I get 2 high upside prospects and an exciting guy (Smith Jr.) that I think could make his major league team next year especially if Bautista doesn't return to the jays next season and since Steve Pierce is not the type of defender they hoped for.

+35 Cubs Everyone values players differently, that's what makes this game fun. But JD Martinez is easily a top 20 outfielder. Ellsbury might be top 100...maybe. Montero & Coghlan are dead money (it actually benefits Chicago to get rid of them and free up 40-man spots). The prospects are interesting, but I haven't seen any of these guys on pre- or mid-season top 100 lists. That said, Khalil Lee has been REALLY good this year. I could see a world where he jumps up onto offseason top 100s, but for now we're talking about two 45-50 grade prospects and a throw-in guy in Smith doing the heavy lifting in landing a top 20 outfielder who just got traded to a better hitting environment. And on top of all that, $7 mill of Martinez's salary is being retained!
Like I said, everyone values players differently. Maybe this comment looks really dumb a year or two from now if Khalil Lee & Jose Albertos shoot up prospect lists, but right now, this looks to be a steal for Chicago.

+30 Cubs
Somehow, I missed this trade until now. I think the Cubs are the clear winner here. As Milwaukee said, none of the prospects Detroit received are very highly regarded when compared to all other prospects. I will point out that Lee and Albertos are top 3 prospects in their own systems, however they're only graded out to be average players right now. I don't even think Lee has been all that great this year unlike what Milwaukee was saying. He looks good if you only look at OBP/HR/SB, not so good when you realize he leads his league in strikeouts and it's not close while also leading his league in number of times caught stealing. Basically, when I looked at his hitting stats, I couldn't tell if he has actually been good or not. He certainly has interesting stats though. Albertos has been pretty meh so far in rookie and low-A ball. Smith has at least looked good in limited action in the majors, but it was only for 12 games and over a month ago. Everyone else in this deal was just to make salary work and won't offer significant help to Detroit in future years. I just think that if you're going to give up a player as good as Martinez, withhold salary, and he isn't a rental, you've got to get at least 1 top 100 prospect.
Detroit could be a prospect genius and could be way ahead of me on these guys. If this deal favors Detroit in the future, he's way smarter than I am.

Lol I don't know why i'm bothering responding to this but these are the facts.
I had 2 other offers for JD than this and this was by far closer to the return I was looking for than those. When I got the team, JD as a player was one of the very few that I remotely would want for this league (and it's scoring) however his contract expires in 2018, completely useless to me since I can't even be relevant till 2019. So the question was can I get more for him now? or before next year's trade deadline? and after considering that I will have about 18Mill more cap freedom next year because of this deal, I chose what I chose. As far as the prospects, I look at much more than MLB rankings or when they were taken in a draft. Being from Toronto and having stories like Bautista, Encarnation, Stroman, Estrada, Pillar and most recently Biagini I have learned that it pays off to do so. If JD had been singed into or through 2019 you would of had to pry him from my cold dead hands. (and if he still looks good at the end of 2018 watch out for me in free agency)
This was more about freeing up dollars than anything, other teams wanted me to retain salary past the end of this season and for me that was to steep of a price for what they were offering. My roster before this deal had 3 20+ Mill contracts and no real "bargain contracts" and in the years to go the number of paid minor leaguers will grow and around the league there are a lot of long term expensive contracts (not everyone can maintain they're production forever). And I don't see 20+ Million contracts under this cap to be of good value.
If you wanted to offer me more, you should of. :/ But I agree, as with any deal I could end up having egg on my face like some gm's have had in the majors.

Putting a lot of faith in Albertos who hasn't pitched more then 15 innings in 2 years and lee who strikes out 30 percent of the time already. +30 For Cubs, even if Albertos pans out he's still at least 3 or 4 years away and I honestly don't see Lee ever making an impact with how much he's struck out in Rookie and low A ball. Can't really think it was worth getting the 13 million off the books especially when next years FA class will be ridiculously thin. But then again, it wasn't as if the RL trade netted the Tigers that much and people value cash much different.
