All,
There are a few critical deadlines approaching in the Juiced Ball League. GM's don't stop improving their dynasties once winter rolls in and neither do we!
Non-tenders and Offseason Buy Outs
New members - I forgot to warn you of this deadline. Non-tenders (Constitution Rule 6.6) must be posted to the proboards site by November 30th. In all honesty I don't expect many candidates for non-tender in our first offseason, but this will become a useful tool after once-prospects wallow in the high minor leagues for a couple seasons.
The same November 30th deadline also applies for Buy Outs of guaranteed contracts (Constitution Rule 6.7). Every team probably has a candidate for these and could be a great way to clear a little salary for 2018.
Rule 5 Draft
Rule 5 draft-eligible players on the 60-man minor league roster must be promoted to the 40-man roster in order to be protected from the draft by December 3rd. The spreadsheet uses a formula to determine eligibility, indicated by a TRUE cell in reference to each player's age and years of minor league service time. This is not a perfect replica of the MLB's Rule 5 eligibility rules, but should be spot on for all Amateur Draft selections and close enough for most international signings. The spreadsheet is the governing tool we will use in determining Rule 5 eligibility - there will be no exceptions.
The full rules for the Rule 5 draft are located in the Constitution, section 8.3. In summary, the draft will begin on December 10th, and comprise of 3 rounds (draft picks cannot be traded). Each team will have 6 hours to pick, with a 4 hour clock pause between 0200 and 0600 EST (so that the overnight pick is 10 hours long).
Because we don't have 25 man rosters like in the MLB, we must treat the "retention" rules regarding Rule 5 selections a little differently. See Constitution section 8.3 for exact wording, but in summary each selection must start in your 23-man scoring Fantrax roster for at least 10 weeks of the regular season, in order to demonstrate that player receiving semi-regular playing time like a Rule 5 selection would in the MLB. If at the end of the season that 10 week threshold is not reached the player will be returned to the original team at the end of the season.
The 40-man limit of the 40-man roster cannot be exceeded by Rule 5 picks, so in order to use all 3 picks a team must begin the Rule 5 draft with 37 or less players on the 40-man roster. Offseason waivers may be used to clear space, typical in-season waiver rules apply before a player can clear waivers and be demoted to Paid Minors.
Team Options
Another approaching deadline is the acceptance or rejection of team options by December 23rd. These have been highlighted in all of your roster spreadsheets for easy location.
Activity
If you can't commit to another season please let me know! These deadlines mean I'll have to replace you fairly soon. If I don't see any owners log in to the Proboards by around November 28th I'll have to start looking for a replacement owner.
Co-Commissioners
Running this league is a ton of work, so I'm always looking for help. If you'd like to take over a small task like running the Rule 5 or MiLFA draft, adding players to Fantrax and spreadsheet rosters, etc I'd love all of the help I can get.
League Suggestions
I love feedback! I've been tweaking rules as I see the need, but it would be great to hear from you guys - what you like/dislike, what rules add little value but additional complexity/time commitment, etc. Post these in the new Suggestions sub-forum for open discussion.(located under League Constitution and Links)
As always contact me with any questions you might have.
